Mark Bird counters a kick from Fraserburgh’s Chris Urquhart
TWO out of three aint bad – So said team coach Billy Murray after another successful Albert Ross Promotion. It was a packed house with great fights, superb fight fans as the three traveling Prokick kickboxers brought home two victories and were pipped at the post for a third. First up was Golden boy Mark Bird who was in no mood for taking second place in any type of competition.
This was Mark’s return to the ring after a shocking defeat last month - the teenager Bird needed a big result and that’s what he produced, said team mate Gary Fullerton. “ Mark showed why he could go all the way, he’s only 17 and has so much talent and appetite for the fight game, he won every round and at times I thought he could have stopped Fraserburgh’s Chris Urquhart but the tough Scott had plans of his own.”
He went on to say "Its onwards and upwards now for young Mark - that win was just what was needed - an extra boost for him and back on winning form.”
Fullerton wasn’t so fortunate as he found himself on the wrong side of the judges in his first title tilt for the Celtic nations Light welterweight crown. "It could have went either way." said Fullerton’s coach Billy Murray.
"I keep saying to the guys went you get the opportunity for a title shot it should be grabbed with two hands and leave no room for any judges to ponder. I think when Gary looks back at the tape he will agree he could have expelled a bit more energy that may have helped sway the people who matter around the ring-side …the Judges, well done though it was a great fight by both boys."
There were no judges needed when Tomas Glazer donned the gloves and took to the ring for his first amateur kickboxing match. Shocker - first punch thrown in the fight and Tomas found what it was like to be staring up at the referee after taking a hard right punch that saw the Slovakian chef on the seat of his pants. It was all over, well so thought Fraserburgh’s Rowan Hooligan.
Tomas earned the respect from many of the top kickboxing trainers by coming off the canvas and taking a terrible pounding in the opening round to come back and stop Rowan Hooligan of Fraserburgh at the end of the second round to take his first win in his competitive career.
Other Big shockers on the night was the much fancied Steve Bonner who was sensationally stopped in his tracks for world glory in his attempt to lift the WKN Super Heavyweight amateur world Full-Contact Title by Polish hard man Puchack Jacek
The brave and gutsy Nicola Craigie lost her bid for European honours for the WKN amateur Super-Bantamweight European Title to the talented Sandra Drabik of Poland.
It was Adele Steinback who was the toast of Scotland last night in Aberdeen when she lifted the WKN amateur Bantamweight world crown – Steinback was in a class of her own so focused on the task and the light at end of the tunnel – the classy Scot showed why she was crowned Queen of the Bantamweights,
A great performance a fighter that Scotland should be proud of!
Well done to the orginisers the WKN for the matchmaking - the fight fans who helped make the night special…a good job well done all.
