Simmons kickboxer who took a strong blow during a Thai Boxing fight died in hospital on Monday afternoon 2 days after the tournament.
She had been fighting Lindsay Scheer in a Muay Thai match on an IKF (international Kickboxing Federation) sanctioned event. After Simmons received the left hook that knocked her unconscious , an IKF doctor treated her, the Sheriff's Office said.
Scheer's coach Eric Haycraft wrote on his facebook 'When Simmons fell, a referee ended the bout immediately, and doctors sitting ringside attended to her right away. After she sat up and spoke, medical personnel took her away from the ring'
Shortly after that, Haycraft wrote, he and Scheer learned that Simmons had been airlifted to the hospital.
There is speculation that there was no ambulance attending the event. Florida's WFTV reported that Steve Fossom, President of the IKF, said he arranged for an ambulance from a nearby firestation to be on call but it was not present at the fight.
The State of Florida Athletic Commission's rule for all amateur kickboxing / muay thai events is that if there is a hospital within 5 miles of the event venue, no ambulance is required. This rule is followed by all amateur sanctioning bodies in the state of Florida.
Everyone here at the ProKick Gym sends our condolences, prayers and thoughts to the friends and family of Adriene Simmons at this very difficult time.
Our love and thoughts our also with Lindsay Scheer

Tragic. This shows the importance of having full medical facilities available, especially an ambulence. I play American Football for a team in Belfast and years ago at one of our games, one of our referees just randomly collapsed. We always have an ambulence at all of our games and thanks to the quick response, he made a full recovery. His heart had actually stopped altogether. The importance of having all neccessary medical facilities is paramount. If the IKF had an ambulence at the event centre, would things have had a different ending?
