ProKick Gym has always prided itself on providing the proper training for everyone who walks through the door regardless of age or goal. Pauline originally started the 6 week beginner course to go along with a friend who didn't want to go by herself. Long since then and friend absent, Pauline continues to train harder than ever.
She said: "It's bizarre to think that after signing up for a six-week course I am now aiming for a Black Belt in kickboxing. I started the course to add to my fitness and wanted to try something new. I was hooked after the first class and then when I moved on to the Prokick Gym I just wanted more and more of it. I never would have imagined myself in a real fight gym, the sort I was only used to seeing on television and in movies."
Pauline is now considered a senior member of the Prokick Gym managed by former world champ Billy Murray. She has also dragged her Irish dancing champion granddaughter Grace into the sport and the 10-year-old has already advanced to a Blue Belt.
Coach Murray said: "Pauline is in the gym three times a week and then brings Grace to her classes. She is dedicated to achieving in the sport and has set herself an aim of becoming a Black Belt before the age of 60. Given her dedication and desire, I would have no doubt she will be a Black Belt within the next five years."
Murray says Pauline, who is 11 years younger than Prokick's oldest active member Dessie MacArtney (66), is an inspiration to women her age.
He added: "Pauline was 49 when she first came to a Prokick class and as she has got older she has become stronger and faster. She is a fine example of the benefits that come with the decision to lead an active and healthy lifestyle."
