Wayne captured the imagination of world in 1992 when he and fellow amateur boxer Michael Carruth returned from the Barcelona Olympics with Ireland’s only medals. He went on as a professional to the backyard of Japanese WBC Bantamweight champion Yasuei Yakushiji and ripped the title from him in a monumental scrap over twelve rounds that saw his name catapulted truly onto the world stage.
Saying that - the old saying in boxing is, that a fighter is the first person to know when he should retire but the last one to admit it. News of McCullough's return was met with many pugilist with collective heads shaking and eyes rolling with many feeling that he should look after his health and hang the gloves up once and for all but McCullough still believes that he has plenty left in the tank to offer the fight game.
We at ProKick wish him well and think that he could cause an up-set in Barry Hearn’s exciting and unpredictable Prizefighter Series.
