Boxing legend honoured by Boxing &
Kickboxing fans
December 18, 2005
THE
GREAT and the good from the world of boxing, kickboxing and
politics dined with fight legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler at the
Hilton Hotel on Sunday evening.
A reception in honour of former world middleweight champion Hagler
- considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time - was
a big success, with the American receiving gifts from the city of
Belfast.
Almost 200 fights fans had the previlage of spending time with Hagler,
who said he was "overwhelmed" by the reception. Among
the guests were Irish boxing stars Brian Magee and Sam and Gerry
Storey, and former Belfast Lord Mayor, Jim Rodgers.
The event was a perfect curtain raiser for KICKmas BOX III show
at the Ulster Hall, where Belfast man Gary Hamilton challenged Mohamad
Samir for the WKN light-welterweight title.
Promoter Billy Murray said: "It has been wonderful for Belfast
and Northern Ireland to have had such a great boxing star like Marvin
Hagler on our doorstep. The sport of kickboxing is now a major player
in entertainment in Ireland and across the world and I know many
from the boxing world who are turning their attention to kickboxing."
The Belfast City Council honoured Marvelous Marvin Hagler's with
a reception at the City Hall.
More on this later.
