Marvellous Marvin Hagler was ring-side at the weekend
to watch the 20 year old light middleweight secure yet another
knockout win. This time, the Grim Reaper Grimason dispatched
Swiss hero Coco Coubaly with a devastating volley of shots
in the first round of their battle. He was too strong with
his left/right combinations and had his more experienced
opponent on the canvas within the opening seconds before
the ref stepped in just before the end of the first following
another flurry of blows.
It’s now 13 wins from 13 outings, 11 by knockout,
for the young Belfast star. And the plaudits started arriving
almost as fast as his left jab.
“It was a great thrill for Andrew to be on this card,”
said Murray. “There were over 3,500 people in the
hall watching a collection of Europe’s best talent.
When we heard Marvin Hagler was ring-side, I was shaking.
But Andrew remained focused, kept his fight game in his
mind and went out to show Marvellous Marvin what he could
do.
There was some sad news for Grimason’s training partner
Gary Hamilton. The world featherweight champion - who recently
moved up to flyweight - broke his ankle in a freak accident
two rounds into his battle with Frenchman Fabio Pinca.
As Hamilton moved to come out of his corner following an
exchange of blows, the champ slipped and broke the right
ankle.
“I’m gutted,” said Hamilton after the
encounter. “I felt I was matching him well, I had
the measure of him. It was a great work-out ahead of June
10 and then by a pure freak, I went over on my ankle.”
“I’m devastated for Gary,” said Murray.
“He was coming back into great form and was looking
hungry ahead of June. The doctors are still to establish
if surgery is needed and they won’t know for a day
or two until the swelling goes down. There are two fractures
and some ligament damage. Gary is biggest hearted fighter
I’ve ever met. It’s not looking good for him
making the card in June, but until he and his doctors tell
me there is no way, then I won’t scratch his name.
We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”
