Park Avenue Results

ProKick Gym's reputation as the number one Kickboxing base in Northern Ireland was reinforced at the weekend when its fighters triumphed last weekend at a major event.

There were an incredible 22 bouts on the action-packed bill.
"This was a great success for Kickboxing," said ProKick chief coach Billy Murray. "It was great to see such a wonderful spread of talent from across Ireland. Obviously I am proud ProKick fighters did so well, but the main success story was kickboxing itself. The sport can now draw on so many talented newcomers – and that is because of the strides the sport has made in recent years.”
Some 500 fans packed into the hotel to watch the action. Such was demand for tickets that all seats were snapped up within 24 hours of going on sale.

One of the most impressive of the new breed was north Belfast’s Stephen Weatherup. The super middleweight was taken the distance by Darren Dougan from Golden Dragon ( The loup) in Magherafelt but did enough to take an unanimous points decision. Bout fighters have been tipped for big things by Murray.
Stephen and Kyle Cully, two brothers from Portavogie, also set down markers for the future.
Light Middleweight Stephen stopped Derry’s Jim Ramsay with a flurry of punches in the second and light middleweight Kyle repeated the feat, knocking out Waterford’s Jason O’Sullivan in the second round of their contest.
Some of the junior fighters on the card also showed why they will be force in the future.
Light welterweight Sam Ward was the most deadly. The 15 year-old stopped his 16 year-old opponent David O’Sullivan from Waterford in the first round.

Some more prominent names in kickboxing also had successful outings. Andrew Grimason, nicknamed the Belfast Express because of the speed of his punch, took a points victory over the experienced Anthony O’Brien of Waterford. Again it was his constant, effervescent approach that laid the ground-work for his victory. It’s now five wins in five fights for the light middle weight. His camp are starting to talk about titles.

Lydia Braniff, the Atomweight with a bright future, was held to a draw by Nicola Walsh. It marked a quick return to action for Braniff after her shock defeat in Bangor last month and bodes well for the future.

Another ProKick lady Natalie Deronja also recorded a Draw with the more experienced and talented Jennifer Dougan of Galway. It was her first fight in two years.
Other notable performances came from Ruairi McGrillen, Bill Morrow, Gareth Heaney, Tony Darling, Marty Keys and Philip Murray.

"It was wonderful day’s action from promising amateur stars of the future," said World featherweight champion Gary Hamilton who was ringside for the event.
"There is so much talent out there it’s great they have a chance to shine at an event of this kind."

Thanks for all the clubs who made the journey and helped make the event the success it was.
