Kickboxing in Northern Ireland is set for another massive
leap forward.
The biggest event the sport has ever seen, Kickboxing Mania
VII, will be held at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on June
10. The vast complex will see over 5,000 fans pack in for
the show. It more than doubles the biggest of any other kickboxing
promotion held before in Ireland.
In another massive coup for the sport, the show will be televised
live across Europe on the Eurosport network during a two hour
peak-time special.
“We have been working on this show and TV tie-in for
many months,” announced event promoter Billy Murray
today. “It says everything about the growth of kickboxing
that we are able to do this.
“Boxing is wavering and has found itself on the ropes
recently, but kickboxing is on its toes and ready to deliver
knock-out after knock-out after knock-out. Needless to say,
the card for this event will be very special. We are going
to reunite two of the sport’s biggest names, Gary Hamilton
and Mohammed Samir. Belfast’s world featherweight champion
Hamilton recently gave up his title, undefeated, in order
to move up a weight and challenge his great rival. Samir,
unbeaten in over 100 amateur and professional fights, has
been making noises for months about wanting to meet Hamilton
in the ring.”
On June 10, each man will face another opponent and give local
fans – and millions across Europe – the opportunity
to judge who has the upper hand. It will be a delicious scene-setter
for an explosive meeting between the pair later in the year
– a fight ALSO set for Belfast.
Another rising local hero Andrew Grimason will also feature.
The 20 year-old has moved from promising, but inexperienced,
youth to fearless title contender within the last six months.
He won again within two rounds on Sunday and will fight for
a European super-welterweight title in Belfast.
“He is a future world champion and he has the best left
hand I have ever seen,” said Murray.
He added: “Needless to say there will be host of other
fights on the card – plus a couple of special surprises
I will reveal closer to the time. For now, open your diary
and mark Mania VIII in on June 10. It is one night out you
will not want to miss.”
