Great News for Prokick Kickboxing Club

KICKBOXING in Northern Ireland took a huge leap forward yesterday when the Belfast City Council’s Support for Sport initiative backed Billy Murray’s Prokick Gym.

The gym run by the former world champion in the east of the city won a substantial award from the council scheme which aims to boost sports clubs and access to sport in the city.

On Tuesday, Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Wallace Brown, will officially hand over a cheque to Prokick Gym and witness for himself the positive role the outlet plays in the city.

The Lord Mayor will be entertained by a demonstration in the art of kickboxing by the gym’s younger members, some of whom are just five years old!

The recognition from the City Council is, according to Billy Murray, another step toward his dream of seeing kickboxing become an Olympic Sport.

“I have been fighting, coaching and promoting for 25 years and, finally, a prestigious body like the Belfast City Council has come on board and welcomed the work we do at Prokick,” said Murray.

“I have campaigned with the Northern Ireland Sports Council to come on board and recognise the sport too, that’s my next plan. The Belfast City Council has actually helped kickboxing throughout Northern Ireland because it has been so supportive.

Murray is currently lobbying the International Olympic Committee (IoC) to have kickboxing installed as an Olympic sport.

He is convinced that with kickboxing at the Games, Great Britain and Ireland will add to Gold medal hauls.

“We are breeding faster than any other sport in Northern Ireland with our members coming from all communities here. Our motto is Truth, Discipline, Respect and if the students who come in leave with those qualities, we have achieved. That’s what the city council has recognised.

“Kickboxing is the fashion and more and more of my students are becoming attracted to the competitive side of the sport. If we had an Olympic target I have no doubt there would be more gold medals coming home.”
