BOXING
legend, Marvelous Marvin Hagler will spend Christmas in Belfast
after he accepted an invitation to attend one of the city’s
biggest ever fight nights at the Ulster Hall.
The former world middleweight champion who was involved in classic
bouts with Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Alan
Minter, will be the guest of honour when Belfast’s Gary Hamilton
challenges for the world kickboxing title.
Hagler, who will stay in Belfast with his wife Kay, accepted the
invitation from promoter and former world champ Billy Murray.
“I pitched the idea to Marvin when
we met earlier this year in Geneva,” said Murray.
“It is a great coup for Belfast to have such a legendary sports
star visit just days before Christmas and he and his wife are excited
about seeing our wonderful city.”“Marvin Hagler will
now see the home of great Irish boxers and the new home of great
Irish kickboxers,” added Murray.
“It’s a great boost for sport and for the young people
involved.”
"BOXING legend, Marvelous Marvin Hagler
said: I'm looking forward to visiting the city of Belfast.
I've never had the pleasure to visit Northern Ireland before, it
is something that my wife and
I are looking forward to. I've heard so much about the country and
how vibrant Belfast city has
became since the troubles have stopped."
Marvelous Marvin Hagler went on to say:
" I can't wait to be part of this historical fight between
Gary Hamilton, whom I saw fight in Geneva last April, and Mohammed
Samir, reputedly the best
pound for pound kickboxer on the planet. And to see this fight first
hand at one the world's most famous fight venues which has witnessed
some of the world's finest boxers and fights, is definitely something
to look forward to"!
His final words were:
" I expect to see a good show between
Hamilton and Samir and some good punches too" !!!!
Hagler’s visit follows Joe Frazier’s stay in Belfast
almost two year’s ago. The former heavyweight champ who shared
memorable fight scenes with Mohammad Ali, came to the city as a
special guest of former Lord Mayor and amateur boxer Alex Maskey.
It’s all go for non-stop Murray in recent months. The former
four-time world champion was in Las Vegas last month to secure rights
to bring the K1 fight phenomenon to Northern Ireland and will travel
to Tokyo next week to finalise the deal. Also in November he will
take a team of fighters to compete in Cyprus.
And, last month the Prokick Gym owner landed a contract with the
Irish-owned Setanta Sports channel to have a series of kickboxing
events screened in the UK & Ireland in October and November.
