The Donegal Road-born fighter gave up a featherweight title defence in order to challenge the great Mohammad Samir at the Ulster Hall last December. In a heavier weight division, Samir stopped the ‘Belfast Boy’ in front ringside guest, boxing legend Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
Hamilton will now concentrate on the lightweight division and believes he can become a two-time two weight world champion in becoming only the second man from all of Ireland to win WKN titles at different weights.
“It’s feels like an age has passed since my fight with Samir,” said Hamilton.
“I was sore for a short while after it and did my best to relax over Christmas,” said the 26-year-old who runs 10 miles per day.
“this match is at 64kg a comfort zone in the lightweight division, I am focussed on becoming a world champion again and a two-time two weight one at that,” he added.
Following his December defeat, Hamilton wed fellow Prokick Gym fighter Andrea McAllister and has just returned from honeymoon.
“I cannot complain about the time I’ve had to relax and get my mind around the loss in December,” he said.
“It’s been great to detach myself from the gym for a couple of weeks but that didn’t stop me training. I was on the road everyday of my honeymoon and it was great to get some warm-weather training in at this time of year.”
Hamilton is a household name in Geneva, where it’s expected he will once again perform in front of a big audience there.
