Motherwell Event
FORMER
Linfield player Ian Young will lead a team of Ulster kickboxers
into a Celtic showdown with Scotland’s finest in Motherwell
this weekend.
Celtic champ Young will challenge Greg Doherty for the British
super-welterweight at the Hilton Hotel, while Peter Rusk will
seek revenge in his re-match with Peter Ford, with the super-cruiserweight
belt on offer.
Young was offered the fight at the weekend when Doherty was
told his scheduled opponent, Englishman Paul Johnson, had
withdrawn due to illness.
“It’s a big opportunity for me,” said Young.
“I just won the Celtic title and intended to defend
it but when a chance to win another belt was offered, I wasn’t
going to knock it back.”
Liverpool fanatic Aubrey Tarr, who hails from Ballysillan,
will showdown with old foe Alexander White for the third time
in less than 12 months. The pair will clash with the British
lightweight title at stake.
World champ Andrew Grimason will meet Hugh White in a non-title
bout and world featherweight king Gary Hamilton will also
enter a warm-up contest with Stuart McGowan.
Martin Connolly, the Carrickfergus heavyweight, will also
appear on the Motherwell card, aiming to reproduce the 13-second
knockout win in Aberdeen last April.
