Historical Garden Party in Dublin
Kickboxing
celebrated a key moment this week when a host of the stars of the
sport met Irish President Mary McAleese at an official reception
in Dublin.
The WKN delegation, led by Belfast’s former four-time world
champion Billy Murray, met the President at her official residence
in Dublin.
They spent three hours with her during a special July 12 garden
party.
“It was a wonderful day,” said Murray. “We had
representatives from WKN kickboxing across Europe – from France,
Switzerland, Scotland and of course from all over the North and
South of Ireland. We chatted to the President and presented her
with a commemorative painting by our Kickboxing artist, Daryl Campbell.”
He added: “She came to the ProKick Gym in Belfast in 2004
on an official visit and it was great to be invited on a return
trip. I feel that this really shows kickboxing is a sport for the
new century when so many of us are mixing in such rarefied air.
It also says so much about the unifying nature of kickboxing when
this happens on a day that frequently means division for so much
of Northern Ireland.
"My next challenge is to get President McAleese along to a
kickboxing show. Now that would be a story.”
