Billy
Murray and his team dined with Geneva's high-society and chatted
to the rich and famous when accepting an invite to a private
function by the British Ambassador to Geneva - Mrs Suzanne
Gregory.
Murray was in Villars Switzerland as he led an All Ireland
kickboxing team against the Swiss. His Prokick Gym, has geared
toward giving youngsters a rare opportunity to experience
a different lifestyle in a country where Murray spent two
years developing his fight career. Murray has spent much of
his career using sport to build bridges between communities.
He has been a leading figure in bringing together sports people
from all corners of Ireland, and was recently acknowledged
for this work by the Irish President, Mary McAleese.
The Swiss team captain, Carl Emery and Murray both worked
hard together to make the venture in Villars a reality and
furthering an already strong link between Switzerland and
Ireland. The Villars event was a co-promotion between former
world champ Carl Emery and Claude Oehrli, owner of a restaurant
called Rotisserie Des Alpes,” explained Murray.
“It has been a brilliant thing to witness,” said
ProKick head coach Billy Murray. “For many of these
kids – all of whom are aged between 6-12 years old –
this was their first time on a plane and their first trip
abroad. They were selected on merit to perform at the event
in Switzerland and it was down to the dedication of the children
and their families that we were able to take so many of them
to Switzerland."
Murray added, " And if you thought nothing could top
it off - we were at a reception hosted by the UK Embassy to
acknowledge the work Carl and I are doing, its madness, we
were holding court in front of top Irish and US delegates,
along with some of the richest people in the country and the
great thing was they were all really interested in what we
were doing - it was an unforgettable night. Carl and I both
giggled like kids when we left, we were as proud as punch.
“I would like to thank everyone involved at the UK
Mission for inviting me and my team. It was an honour to be
there and we all had a great time!”
Several senior members of the ProKick team,
including world champion Gary Hamilton and Ian Young, also
competed in the Villars event. See
