Commonwealth title shot
for Jess
Saintfield's
Stuart Jess has landed a Commonwealth title shot -
but has to put his recently won British belt on the line at
the same time.
Jess was invited by old foe, England's Barinder Singh, to
share the kickboxing ring again after Jess defeated him on
a close points decision in Belfast in June.
Irate Singh, who believed he deserved better, challenged Jess
to an immediate re-match, a 10-round contest for the Commonwealth
and British crowns.
It's a mammoth challenge for inexperienced Jess, who rose
to the top of the rankings after his shock British title win,
because he hasn't gone beyond five rounds in the amateur ranks.
Adding to the pressure, the showdown in Leicester on September
10, will be televised.
Jess' coach, former world champion Billy Murray said: "Stuart
has time on his side and could have waited for a chance like
this come along. But now that it has sooner than expected,
he does not want to miss out.
"He has come a long way in a short time and I am confident
he can cope with a 10-round challenge and with the big support
that will be backing Singh."
Gary Hamilton may also be out
on the Leicester bill and fresh from his win at the weekend
over former world champion Stuart McGowan of Dundee.
"I've only fought once this year and I just managed to
scrape a draw on that occasion," said Hamilton, it was
great to get back in the ring - since the Mohammed Samir fight
last December I've done a lot of soul searching but after
this fight I feel I'm getting back to my best, I hope Jagtar
Singh Johal can make the fight for me - he is a really good
promoter so I have good faith he'll get me on this card too."
