Northern Ireland’s biggest and most successful kickboxing gym group is planning to expand to the North West – and is now scouting for a suitable location.
The ProKick organisation, formed and run by former four weight world champion Billy Murray, wants to tap into the huge enthusiasm for the sport in the area and help create the same number of champions that the parent gym in Belfast has done.
“We are called the gym of champions because we consistently produce world beaters,” said Murray. “At present there are four world champions training out of the gym, three European champs and a host of national and regional title holders.
“But we’re not just about getting people ready to compete. We offer a full range of keep fit and exercise plans using the dynamics of kickboxing from the beginner up.
“I know there is a hunger for kickboxing in the north west. Many of my members travel from Coleraine, some from Derry and surrounding towns. There is such commitment to the sport there and I want to deliver a gym that is worthy of the commitment.
“The safety of our members is placed ahead of everything else. Some kickboxing gyms cut corners and play lip service. I want to provide a ProKick in the north west that becomes a beacon for quality and honesty.
“Prokick has been built on three fundamental watch words – Truth, Discipline, Respect. They are instilled into our members and they carry them with them at all times. Our members come from both communities – always have done – and I’d like the Derry gym to be exactly the same. Kickboxing is the inclusive sport of tomorrow.”
Murray said he was keen to meet with operators of hotels, leisure complexes and other kickboxing clubs or individual members who are keen to work with ProKick. They can ring him on 028 9065 1074 or email on info@ProKick.com
Murray’s next instalment is at the Millenniums Forum as the Prokick Road show will roll into the Maiden City for the ‘Brawl in the Wall’ September 29.
The show will see local hero Dougan, push for a WKN (World kickboxing Network) European title, just one of three European titles up for grabs on the night.
Also on the card, football star turned ring hero Ian Young will defend his European title and The cream of fighters from Germany, Italy, Switzerland and England will also appear guaranteeing a ‘fight night’ not to be missed.
It has also been revealed that top local TV personality Joe Lindsay, host of BBC TV’s Getaways and Inside-Out, will MC the event. World Champion Ken Horan will also put in an appearance and promoters are hoping World champion Gary Hamilton will put on a brief exhibition bout before he heads to Russia a fortnight later for a defence of his WKN Featherweight crown.
