“Health For Kids awards
£10,000 in prizes for individuals, teams and groups”
Billy
Murray, one of local sports most recognisable faces, helped launch
a campaign last week to make the country’s kids fitter and
healthier, writes William Bruce .
Kickboxing king Murray put his weight behind the Health For Kids
awards programme which is offering over £10,000 in prizes
for individuals, teams and groups who have made a real difference
to child health through healthy eating and physical activity initiatives.
They will also reward those who tackle tough issues including obesity,
emotional health, drug and alcohol abuse, safety, or helping young
people get wise about sex and relationships.
Murray was at the ASDA store in Westwood in Belfast last week to
help kick off the campaign. He put a host of eager young fans through
their paces showing them some of the basic exercises they can do
anywhere to start their climb to fitness. He said he was happy to
help.
“As someone who has devoted his life to encouraging a healthy,
stay fit message, I’m delighted to be involved,” he
said. “When a kid starts training and going through physical
training it doesn’t just help them physically, it helps them
mentally. It makes them more confident, more self-assured and ready
to head into adulthood with confidence.
“I’m glad there is also a focus on anti-bullying projects.
These are particularly close to my heart as I was bullied as a child.
Helping children to build their confidence will enable them to express
their feelings and deal with bullies.
“Kickboxing did that for me, and kept me fit at the same time.
People who have initiatives of any sort to help children live healthier
happy lives deserve the chance to win an award, so go to www.hfkawards
and enter now” added Murray.
