The United Nations are sending a top diplomat to Northern Ireland today to sit ringside at a major kickboxing show.
Dr Carole Presern, a UK counsellor at the UN in Geneva, is jetting in to attend today’s Brawl on the Wall event in Derry City’s Millennium Forum. Such is the power and influence of Northern Irish kickboxing globally, led by sporting kingpin Billy Murray, that the UN are keen to learn from the work Murray and his ProKick organisation are doing in bringing communities together in Northern Ireland.
Dr Presern organised a glitzy special evening in tribute to Murray at the British consulate in Geneva last year. The event was attended by the British, Irish and American ambassadors to Switzerland.
“We’re delighted and honoured that the UN are recognising our event, our sport and the work we are doing here in this way,” said Murray. “It says everything about the spectacular moves forward the sport is making that we are taken so seriously.
“I hope Dr Presern enjoys the night. Derry City is a very special and very welcoming place and it’ll be one of the biggest sporting events of the year up there. Dr Presern will help make up a very different, blue chip ringside crowd.”
The UN official will be joined ringside by top international lawyer Robert Briner.
