ProKick Reloaded

What does futuristic sci-fi romp The Matrix and Belfast’s ProKick gym have in common? Well, members of the rising east Belfast operation are heading to London next week to show computer games fans moves that knock Keanu and his pals into another dimension.
The gym has been chosen by games giant Sony Playstation to demonstrate their kickboxing acumen at a massive international Games Conference which runs in Earls Court in London from August 25 –31.

Sony had been searching throughout Britain and Europe for a stable of fighters who could go to London and show the moves that games lovers are about to see in a new Sony game,” Prokick owner and chief coach Billy Murray said. “All roads led to the Prokick Gym. We were in negotiations for several months about what they needed and what we could supply but in the end, when they realised the quality of Prokick, the deal came together fairly quickly.”
Murray will take a team of five kickboxers to London next week (August 27) for what will be one of the centerpiece attractions at the computer event. He is busy finalising choreography for his fighters.

Many of the kickboxing moves we use were employed by the makers of The Matrix,” Murray said. “What we are doing relates to a Sony kickboxing game, but it can also be seen in The Matrix. These Belfast boys could should Morpheus a thing or two.”
And the showcase will not just be one-off. Plans are afoot for a further six similar events scheduled across Europe later this year and for the early part of 2004.
The Sony game, based around the K1 kickboxing event – the kickboxing equivalent of the football World Cup which sees the world’s best professional heavyweights meet once a year in a multi-million dollar showdown – will be released this autumn.
If you can’t make it to London to see the team perform, you can see them in Belfast on September 19 at the Ulster Hall. Top of the bill on the night will be Belfast’s Gary Hamilton aiming to become a kickboxing legend by unifying the featherweight world title.
