Some of the Level 2 Sparring class had an opportunity to share the ring with Galways favourite son and after sharing the ring with the Hitman, things only got better.
First up was Ian Young with low leg kick style sparring, Ian put the lads through their paces and a few of the guys met the canvas with a bump. And if that wasn't enough for the eager level 2 class they met the sledgehammer himself, No Joke Jess.
Stuart took the lads through the full contact side of the sport, Kicks above the waist.
Also on hand was world professional champion Gary Hamilton and British champion Mark Bird amongst others.
Level 3 starts next week, this time with the knee.
Contact reception at your next class for more details.
ProKick's next brand new beginner level 1 sparring starts next Wednesday at 6pm, the class is almos full so to book your place call 028 9065 1074 or drop us a line.

This video just goes to show what its like in the ring, the speed of the action and the adrenalin filled sport that it actually is…but that kick i made to Ian is a big girls blouse of a kick, what was i trying to do, tickle him…pathetic….lol
This was a time for us guys to try and understand our blocks and Ian definatly made us think, yet we also had a great night that we all enjoyed immensly…
Although those on the outside may see it as hard kicks and punches, i can assure its not, its a very well controlled environment and is designed for teaching and understanding.
if you are looking in, dont !!
just come in…join the next beginners sparring class..
see for yourself

It was a light kick - glad you enjoyed it, well impressed I was. Its great to see so many getting involved in the sparring, really good bunch of people and everyone has come on so much its crazy.
Can’t wait to see you all getting your 1st fight - then you’ll really experience the roller coaster of emotions, and believe me it is unreal.
I believe it is one of those things in life you must do; people make lists of what they want to achieve etc, or would like to try - I would honestly say to everyone doing the sparring classes to see it through to the end and step through the ropes, you may only do it once - but hey, there is very very few people in life can say they have fought in a professionally organised event.
People always say it looks easy, but i’m sure everyone agrees its not as easy at it looks, and its not just what you do on the night - its the build up, the months of training, preparation - its a journey, and along the way you will ask yourself “what am I doing” LOL, but believe me you will grow as a person.
I don’t think there has been any fight where I haven’t asked myself in between rounds, when my body is aching, shins are aching and i’m punctured “What the Flip (i’ll tone that bit down LOL) am I doing in here - Am I actually insane” - then the bell dings and I’m up and away, and after its the best feeling in the world - even if its a loss, its still an achievement that many will never have the opportunity or the will power / determination to see through to the end.
You’ve all such an opportunity and I say take it with both hands, everyone is really training well and learning so much and you can see that in the sparring.

Cheers Ian
Yeah as i watched you Ian i seen were i thought the guys were going wrong, thankfully i got this one right, i suppose the guys keep distance to get that kick round, or to avoid a kick or punch but as it didnt work to well i did the opposite as i noticed you taking them down so quickly..but what sports the guys were…
No doubt you had many other moves and techniques on your mind to take me down anyway..and yes i think the class is really coming along, me, well i had never have imagined id be saying i got into the ring with the likes of yourself and as i said, take the fight to you and stay, id normaly be the first to stay away…but Mr Murray has shown us what is capable of anyone, with determination and practice, what we need to do and how to take it, we are learning so much and last night was an amazing learning experience and thankfully shows that we do have the go in us all to go for it and enjoy the sparring no matter what..
Next week is leval 3 sparring…amazing saying that (leval 3)

Mark - LOL,
Your a thinker; i knew after about 30secs you had worked out to stay close to me, you were right in my face and didn’t give me any room - and yes, you were the only one not on the canvas. But the fact you stayed close didn’t give me a lot of opportunity to get my range - so it was very good.
The only reason everyone else was on the canvas was because I was coming underneath the block, and this is something you guys will most definately learn about over the next few weeks with Mr Murray - but he did specifically say to me to vary the kicks, low, high, middle and the odd time come underneath; it was all to give everyone a flavour of variety and just to see what to expect when fighting Kickboxing Rules.
To be honest I was very impressed with everyone, can’t believe how far you have all come in such a short space of time - just goes to show you what hard work and discipline can do - and most importantly the ability to listen to what you are being shown / taught - and no better teacher than Mr Murray.
If everyone keeps at it and keeps improving / training hard and listening we’ll have some brilliant guys coming through in the next few months and I’m sure there will be more than 1 pushing for a fight.
I can’t wait.

Ok, looking forward to our normal wendnesday night sparring class and i check the internet only to find that its all changed..
instead of 8pm, its now 6.30, instead of sparring amongst our group we are told we will be sparring with Ken Horan and his fit gang of Fighters, Stuart Jess and Ian Young, not to mention whilst waiting to get into the ring sparring with other fighters on the floor with Mark Bird, his brother david to name a few.
And all this after our run around the prokick block (timed)
From start to finish it was a non stop heart pumping addrenalin filled evening..
AND IT WAS BRILLIANT..
What a opportunity never to forget or miss, the instant I entered the ring against Ken Horan my instinct kicked in and hands were held high protecting my head, i started kicking and punching like crazy, i loved it, i was full of that buzz you get in the ring..ken came back with some super fast kicks and punches and his blocks are definantly well practiced unlike me (who tends to try and absorb strikes)..
Next was Ian Young, he was practicing his low kicks, i was 6th into the ring with him, every other previous opponent ended up on the floor..Watching this made me freak, i honestly did, seeing Ian kick out made me shake, but before i knew it i was in..
He came at me and all i wanted was not to end up on the floor, so i took the fight to him trying to stay close, when i kicked i made it as fast as i possibly could so there was no opening for him to take me down..and i did it, i didnt go down, though i think he simply didnt want to put me down, i was nearly down but nope..i left with my head buzzing, heart pumping and sweating and boy what an opportunity and experience, Ian young is an unstoppable fighter..
Next up was Stuart Jess, the guy with a numbing punch, in i went and straight into it, bang, thump wallop, dizzy head..that was me..he pumelled my wee delicate body, but i got straight back in there and punched and kicked and blocked and had an amazing time, stuarts punches really do hurt and one of them really did knock me back to never never land, however as im learning through my experience’s in the ring, you have to not show your hurt and get back in there.
On the floor sparring was just as great, your suddenly sparring with guys who know what they are doing and you gain so much from this, you understand your blocks and counter punches so much more..
The bell rang and its time to change sparring partner, i look around and whos starring at me…Big James Gillen, i thought to myself, oh boy…...
So in i went, james held out his left hand waiting for the open, when it wasn’t there he just made his own…lol
i reckon he had lead in those gloves, and even though he was simply sparring and makng light jabs, you felt them..Then it came, BANG..the kick to the head, crikey how many kicks to the head have i taken in the last 2 weeks..lol
Knocks you back and stuns you as well, however James Knows what he is doing so took it obviously easy..
Cheers James
Mark Bird I noticed watches his opponent very closely, he waits for that opportunity of a counter attack and takes it before your even aware he did it…but i got a good kick to his waist and half a punch to his face, so im happy..lol
After the class we then did our second run, you had to beat your first time otherwise you would be doing it again, i sucessfully did, only 2 seconds off , so im not happy, i could have pushed harder i think, but i can improve..
All in all a memorable night of exercise, kickboxing and so much invaluble learning experience.
I thank everyone involved and wish Ken Horan and his team the best of luck for April the 18th, and of course our own prokick fighters..
Next week is the start of our leval 3, Sparring class..isn’t that just amazing..lol 3rd leval sparring…Knees next..
For now however its time for more work to get ready for Sundays Grading..This time its Orange..
